Categories are a great way to organize information and Xidipity expands this functionality to include the media library. In addition to categories, blog posts can be assigned one or more tags. In this circumstance it is useful to think of a category as the subject and tags as the topic. For example, a blog post may be assigned the category of “novels” as the subject and tagged “adventure” as the topic. As a quick start, the following are the categories created for the Xidipity blog.

 

Archive

Description:

Posts assigned to this category are not included in the blog summary.

 

The archive category serves two purposes. The first is it removes the post from the blog summary and second it indicates the content is no longer current. A typical blog document management workflow is as follows.

 
  1. create content
  2. publish blog
  3. archive blog
  4. save blog to offline storage
  5. delete blog

 

It is important to note the archive category is designed to be used only with blog posts.

 

Media Library

Parent Category:

None

Description:

Media library contents. Anticipated formats include gif, jpg, mov, mp4, and png.

 

Everything saved to the media library is eligible for this category.

 

Blog

Description:

Blog featured and embedded images.

 

This category is used to identify featured images and other artifacts use in the content.

 

Gallery

Description:

Images which share a common theme or will be displayed as a group.

 

This category is used to identify images which share a common theme or will be displayed as a group. This functionality is supported by the image gallery template.

This category is used to used to identify page content artifacts.

 

Site

The  categories SpecialGroup2 and SpecialGroup3 serve the same purpose.

Description:

Default category which acts as a marker to unassigned posts.

 

Selecting Categories

Categories are assigned and updated as a part of the editing workflow. Although they can also be created as a part of the workflow this process omits the option of adding a description. Selected categories will be placed at the top of the hierarchy as shown below.

To assign a blog post to the category General, the workflow is as follows.

 
  1. Uncheck
    • ​Uncategorized
  2. Check
    • ​Posts
    • ​General

 

If the Yoast plugin is installed, an option to set a category as the primary is displayed. Typically the last category would be selected which is General in this case.

The default category can be changed through the admin panel by selecting Settings (​​) -> Writing -> Default Post Category.
